An Update on Chronic Kidney Disease

CKD Brief

More than 20 million U.S. adults aged 20 years and older have chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the overall Medicare cost for CKD in 2012 was $44.6 billion dollars, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and United States Renal Data System (URDS) estimates. Although research has identified numerous ways to curb the rising rates of CKD, significant gaps remain in measuring the burden and implementing cost effective prevention programs nationwide. CDC’s CKD Initiative has developed a new issue brief that highlights the agency’s role in CKD prevention and promising interventions and innovative research aimed at reducing CKD incidence, complications and its associated costs. The CKD Issue Brief may help raise awareness and better educate the public, partners, and decision makers about CDC’s role in CKD prevention.
