The Integrated Food Safety Centers of Excellenceserve as resources and provide technical assistance and training for local, state, and federal public health professionals who respond to foodborne illness and outbreaks. CDC's Food Safety Office coordinates the Centers.

In 2012, CDC named five state health departments and their partner academic institutions as Centers of Excellence under the authority of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
