Learning Community to Advance Trauma-Informed Approaches in Primary Care

WHEN
Thursday, April 16, 2015 | 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDT
DESCRIPTION
The National Council for Behavioral Health in partnership with and sponsored by Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit*  is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for health centers to explore the degree to which the adoption of trauma sensitive screening, assessment and treatment practices will support primary care settings in their efforts to successfully support high need patients. Safety net organizations selected for this initiative will work to create organizational improvements including utilization of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study to help identify patients with a history of trauma/adverse life events. Adverse life events represent those events that individuals are likely to experience as traumatic, i.e, terrifying and/or overwhelming in a way that exceeds the person’s internal and external coping resources, such as abuse, neglect, or loss of caregiver. The ACE’s study was conducted by Kaiser Permanente in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is one of the largest investigations ever conducted to assess associations between childhood maltreatment and later-life health and well-being. Almost two-thirds of the study participants reported at least one adverse childhood experience of physical or sexual abuse, neglect, or family dysfunction, and more than one of five reported three or more such experiences.
For interested health centers seeking additional information about this initiative, please register for the upcoming informational session.
