This issue highlights disaster preparedness and recovery efforts in two areas of the country—Colorado, as part of recovery after the 2012 theater shooting in Aurora, and New York, in preparing to support people returning from Africa who may have been exposed to Ebola during the recent outbreak. The articles describe work done as part of each effort; challenges encountered; and lessons applicable to preparedness, response, and recovery for many types of disasters.

Aurora Strong: A Colorado Community's Experience With the SAMHSA Emergency Response Grant
In this article, authors describe the work done under a SAMHSA Emergency Response Grant (SERG) to support Colorado communities in recovery after the 2012 Aurora theater shooting. They identify other tragedies in Colorado around the time of the shooting, recount the work they did under the SERG, and explain how a medical model of trauma helped Coloradans cope more effectively with their responses to recent disasters.

This article covers behavioral health consequences of isolation and quarantine and provides details of a toolkit New York State put together to prepare counselors to respond effectively to the recent Ebola outbreak.
