Understanding Laboratory Tests

Key Points

  • A laboratory test is a procedure in which a sample of blood, urine, other bodily fluid, or tissue is examined to get information about a person’s health.
  • Although many laboratory tests are used to help diagnose cancer, a biopsy (the removal of cells or tissues for examination under a microscope by a pathologist) is usually needed to be certain that a person has cancer.
  • Laboratory testing in the United States, except that done in clinical trials and other types of human research, is regulated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services through the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). The CLIA program helps ensure that laboratory staff are appropriately trained and supervised and that laboratory test results are accurate and reliable regardless of where a test is done.
