Transforming NCI’s Clinical Trials Programs - National Cancer Institute

National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health

Transforming NCI’s Clinical Trials Programs

NCI has transformed its clinical research programs to keep pace with advances in the scientific understanding of cancer. With the creation of the National Clinical Trials Network and NCI Community Oncology Research Program, systemic changes are in place that will improve cancer research and lead to improvements in care for the 1.6 million Americans diagnosed with cancer every year.

  • National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN)
NCTN is a new clinical trials research network that provides an infrastructure for NCI treatment, screening, and diagnosis trials. The new infrastructure allows investigators to begin clinical trials more quickly, reach conclusions faster, and offer patients studies that incorporate precision medicine at over 3,000 clinical trials sites.
  • NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP)
NCORP is a community-based program that builds upon the scope and activities of NCI's previously supported community networks: the NCI Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) and NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP). The program brings cancer clinical trials, as well as cancer care delivery research (CCDR), to individuals in their own communities, thereby generating a broadly applicable evidence base that contributes to improved patient outcomes and a reduction in cancer disparities.
While NCI’s clinical research programs are changing, the Institute remains committed to every patient enrolled in an NCI-funded clinical trial and will ensure that they continue to have the opportunity to receive the full benefit of those trials.

Other NCI Programs That Sponsor or Conduct Clinical Trials

NCI supports clinical research in many ways, beyond just the NCTN and NCORP. Numerous other programs directly or indirectly support clinical research.

Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP)
CTEP is the program within the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis that plans, assesses, and coordinates all aspects of clinical trials.

Center for Cancer Research
The Center for Cancer Research at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland exists to seek answers for critical questions about a particular diseases or disease process and to identify promising new therapeutic interventions that can then be confirmed in larger studies carried out across the country at cancer centers participating in NCI-supported research.

CCR Clinical Trials at NIH
Cancer clinical trials conducted at NIH are aimed at answering critical questions about a particular disease or disease process and at identifying promising new therapeutic interventions that can then be confirmed in larger studies carried out across the country at cancer centers participating NCI-supported research.

Office of Cancer Centers
OCC supports major academic and research institutions throughout the United States to sustain broad-based, coordinated, interdisciplinary programs in cancer research.

NCI-Designated Cancer Centers
NCI-Designated Cancer Centers develop and translate scientific knowledge from promising laboratory discoveries into new treatments for cancer patients. They are at the forefront of NCI-supported efforts at universities and cancer research centers across the United States. Find a center near you and learn about their research capabilities and patient services.

NCI's Cancer Imaging Program - Clinical Trials
Promotes and supports cancer-related basic, translational, and clinical research in imaging sciences and technology, and integration and application of these imaging discoveries and developments to the understanding of cancer biology and to the clinical management of cancer and cancer risk.

Programs That Provide Support to Clinical Trials

  • Developmental Therapeutics Program
As the drug discovery and development arm of NCI, the Developmental Therapeutics Program plans, conducts, and facilitates the development of therapeutic agents for cancer and AIDS.
  • NCI/CTEP Collaborations
Links to CTEP initiatives and collaborative programs that facilitate conducting and developing clinical trials.
