Personalize and Optimize: Recovery Month on YouTube

YouTube_BackgroundThis fall, the Recovery Month YouTube channel was updated to make the page more personal, unique, and relevant for viewers. By customizing the channel background and incorporating playlists, the Recovery Month team created a new look and feel for the three-year-old channel.

The most notable change was a refresh of the channel background. Tapping into design elements of the website, Recovery Month integrated colors and graphics on the YouTube channel background to help unify the branding across platforms. Hyperlinks on the channel’s background image now direct curious users back to various pages, resources, and tools on the Recovery Month website.

Over the years, Recovery Month produced and shared video content that its viewers and subscribers appreciate, from public service announcements and Road to Recovery trailers to recovery event recaps and personal testimonies. This fall, the Recovery Month team organized videos into coordinated playlists for easier user navigation through the channel’s content.

Not only do playlists add organization to the channel by grouping similar videos together, they also encourage viewers to continue watching Recovery Month content. Once a viewer chooses to watch one video in a playlist, the entire group of videos is queued up, so that relevant videos will automatically play one after the other.

Interested in making updates to your organization’s YouTube channel? Here are a few ideas:
  • Change the background. Updating the background for your YouTube channel is as simple as uploading a new photo. For photo file size specifications, visit the YouTube help home.

  • Create playlists. YouTube shares tips and step-by-step instructions on creating playlists for video content available on your channel. Determine a few central themes among videos and group content accordingly.

  • Include "basic info" for all videos. In the edit section of the Video Manager, you have the option to include a title, description, tags, and category for each video. Update all of these sections, especially the tags, to help viewers find your videos through search.
